Linking rings with scissors

It's time for some hands-on puzzling!

Here are the rules:
1. Start with a long rectangular strip of paper.
2. Tape the two ends of the strip together.
3. Using only scissors, and no more tape, cut the paper into two rings.
4. The end result must be two simply linked rings.

"Simply linked" means that it should be no more complicated than this:

How do you do it?

Turn one end of the strip over twice (or any even-numbered times) before taping the ends together, then slit the strip down the middle with a scissors.

Hah! My dad showed me this for my 7th or 8th birthday party.

He had all these different loops made out of newspaper. He demonstrated to the kids at the party by cutting one of the loops into two completely separate loops. Then he handed the other loops out and started a race with the first person to successfully cut theirs into two as he had shown winning a prize.

All of the loops he handed out had half a twist or more. The kids would bring up these bundles of paper thinking that they had won, and were quite surprised to find that they only had one large loop, or linked loops, or knots.
